Being a working mom is not easy. Most people would look at my life on paper and say she has it all. And for the most part they would be right…..But the truth is I was tired.
This is when I realized that how I was approaching my work wasn’t working and I was starting to burnout. I wanted more control of my time, my workload, and the pace! What I’ve found is the answer isn't about boundaries and delegation and time management…It's breaking past old paradigms and rewiring HOW to operate in my career. It’s graduating from old behaviors that helped achieve success… and replacing those with an upgraded and more EFFECTIVE version of myself. And it’s learning to ENJOY my place at the table… because I’m secure in my value instead of trying to constantly prove myself.
Since I was 16 I’ve had a job, and at every job, I worked to be the most hardworking and reliable employee. I took on extra responsibilities and roles outside my comfort zone at my corporate jobs to prove my worth and work my way up. And while that drive and work ethic are great attributes to have I was still wanting more.
So one of my passions as always been real estate. Before I had my first child I got my real estate license and worked real estate part time while working full time for Corporate America. Then I was introduced to Scout & Cellar in 2017 and I knew I wanted to be a part of this start up company that would disrupt the industry. So here I was with now 2 kids, a full time job in Corporate America, and now 2 side hustles in wine and real estate. My family thought I was nuts but I thought this is great I can continue providing extra income and work this all in the pockets of my day.
I am here to tell you that it wasn’t easy and hence the burnout in the opening part of this story. So what changed? I CHANGED. I realized I was always comparing my worth and my success against that of everyone else’s. I felt like I was failing in real estate when I would see other friends and co-workers getting more listings and selling more houses. I felt like a failure when other Scout & Cellar consultants were growing their business left and right and I was stalling out. I felt like a failure when other moms were making it to every single school function and I was sometimes barely making it to the bus stop. SO I STOPPED! Because comparing my life and my success with others wasn’t fair to me, my family or my businesses.
I took inventory of my life, what I wanted from it, what and who was worthy of my time and I started to SLOW DOWN. We working parents can juggle A LOT but there comes a breaking point. I am here to tell you that you can be a good mom, a good employee, and a good business owner but you have to find the things that set your soul on fire and run with them. You have to stop pushing your family to the side and make them a part of the equation. I think that this new post COVID normal has made us all realize there is more to life than the typical office 9-5. You don’t have to be constantly running on the hamster wheel and trying to outpace your co-worker, your neighbor, or your best friend. Your journey to success will look and mean something totally different than everyone else AND THAT’S OK!!! If you want to work one job the rest of your life because it satisfies you and brings you joy, GREAT….if you want to keep your full time job and had a side hustle for extra income, GREAT….and if you want to turn that side hustle into a full time career and then add a different side hustle GREAT. The point is that there is a seat at the table for EVERYONE.
Trust me I get it and there is a reason I still work in Corporate America. I am not dissing it like a lot of other people in direct marketing might do because my full time job provides me and my family with stability and consistency. BUT Scout & Cellar and real estate are passions. They are businesses. They are work. But they don’t feel like it because they provide me with purpose and a diverse income in case my full time job does quit me or I quit it. The diverse income gives you the realization and comfort that you are in the drivers seat. That you can determine what your future looks like….and if you’re like me that future is something that I dream of and year by year parts of the dream become are becoming a reality.
You don’t have to suffer for your success like I did. Don’t walk away. Don’t live with burnout. As a recession looms, will this be a season of despair or a season of opportunity? Economic downturns are times of insane growth for the wise and the prepared. Uncertainty is cured by action. Enter your passions and possibly a new career or a side gig. Don’t wait until the music stops to scramble to find a chair. I have a seat for you. Come sit and let’s chat!
